To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

To All the Boys I've Loved Before (To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #1)To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jenny Han is one of my new favorite authors with this book and the sequel, P.S, I Still Love You. Lara Jean is one of three Song sisters, the middle child, who is sweet, fearful, and convincing as a protagonist who grows into a teen we can all relate to with her hopes, wishes and fears. As she grows up and writes letters (puts them into her mom's hat box for safe keeping) to boys she has loved (but never dated, just crushed on)Lara Jean is startled to find all her letters have been sent to those boys and craziness ensues!!! I loved this book because it was a rom/com but deals with difficult, serious topics teens will recognize all to well. I was so luck to get both books on ILL, so I jumped into the 2nd book right away! Teens will love this book looking at romance, high school, and families, highly recommended!

New Year, New "No"

The Power of NO

The path to simplicity begins with a refusal of the nonessential and unproductive.

It's been several decades since Americans were first introduced to the idea that they should "Just say no." While the context of this was originally about saying no to drugs, I believe this recommendation has even greater potential for those of us looking to simplify our lives in one way or another. In my ongoing effort to simplify my life, I have found that there are two general categories to which I offer a steadfast and gracious "no" when I can: nonessential external demands and unproductive internal beliefs.

It is important to emphasize that saying no is not negative or selfish or uncaring. Instead, saying no to one thing is equivalent to saying yes to what is more important to you.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)Illuminae by Amie Kaufman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a fantastic rip roaring good read! As Kady & Ezra break up (this is a big thing) little do they know by afternoon their planet, Kerenza, has been attacked and the ex-lovers (barely speaking & angry with each other) are fleeing for their lives. What I loved about this sci-fi action drama was the high octane super charged way the authors accomplished this first in a series- using Memos, hacked documents (IMs, texts, emails), interviews, pictures, graphics all pull this story into a hold your breath drama where 1 girl (great with technology, doesn't work well with others & super bad ass) and 1 guy (team player, fighter pilot and still in love with Kady) fight together & separately to save those on The Alexander, Lincoln & Hypatia from a mutating disease, AIDAN's insanity, and still stay alive. I could not stop following the Kady & Ezra communications (OMG!!!) I am so looking forward to the 2nd book in the series! Kaufman and Kristoff create a thriller where everything is crazy and Kady & Ezra are very strong protagonists the reader just keeps rooting for! Highly recommneded!

Cha...cha..cha..changes!

Well, isn't that the life of a teacher librarian? We are constantly changing what we do and how we do it.

This summer I moved every book in my library and discarded some very old non-essential materials and made lists to replace them with 21st century materials. I also dumped all of my VHS tapes. Yes, you read this correctly. ALL VHS tapes are gone.

There are two reasons for dumping the technology. First, it is ancient technology in schools today when we have laptops instead of DVD players, LCD projectors, and electronic whiteboards. None of the teachers have VHS players in their rooms. None of the teachers have TVs in their rooms. We have one TV in the entire building located in the lobby and it is not to be used for TV shows.

Second, like most people we download, we subscribe, we stream, or we play from a DVD in our laptops. We may be replacing student laptops with Chromebooks so we will only have teacher laptops left in our building. So, out with the VHS tapes. I have spent a lot of time ridding the library of ancient tech and I think I am almost at the end. Baby steps but steps indeed.

Third, I needed the space for my students. I teach in a PK - 4th grade school where very few children reach my shoulder before 4th grade. Due to lack of space my books were shelved on 72" shelves where many students could not reach them and certainly did not maintain the integrity of the shelf once a book was removed. I spread out the books by reclaiming four three-foot 72" tall units and so could lower books for my shorter students, raise individual shelf height to accommodate tall books and make the library look much neater.

I shifted my non-fiction materials, weeded a few I went, to take back those shelves. By doing so I was able to shift my biographies into the non-fiction section and put them at a better height as well. I also reorganized my picture book section by AR level. Our school enjoys using AR and I wanted to make the sections more distinct. I spent a great deal of time color coding levels and reshelving. Books without AR quizzes are shelved at the end of the section to be revisited and enjoyed.

I finished reorganizing the fiction section of the library by genre. My students loved that I did this last year as it made the sections easier to access and when students asked where the fiction sports books were shelved, I could point to a section. I also removed a computer table and two chairs in order to make way for two recycled seating benches. I want my kids to enjoy sitting and reading on days where we are free to just read.

My next goal is to replace some of the old furnishings in the library. I have a GoFundMe account set up so if you are interested in see what has been done and want to help out, go here:

Thanks and enjoy!

The Selection by Kiera Cass

The Selection (The Selection, #1)The Selection by Kiera Cass
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So many of my students raved about this book, I can't believe it took me so long to read/listen to this book. I LOVED IT! Now I can't wait to listen to the 2dn book in the series. How would you feel if you were America Singer, one of a bevy of young women who may be chosen by Prince Maxon to be his wife and queen? Rather than being happy, America is conflicted because she is in love (secretly) with Maxon who is a member of a lower cast. With lots of drama, action, and heart pounding romance, you will fall in love with America, her world, and the contest known as The Selection.

Book Review: Dreamland (YA edition)

Book Review: Dreamland (YA edition)
by Sam Quinones
Publication Date: July 16, 2019
read courtesy of netgalley.com

You know how there are One School, One Book or One City, One Book campaigns? Well, Dreamland (YA edition) by Sam Quinones should be a candidate for One Country, One Book. It's that good and that meaningful. I'm going to try to find a way to get as many people as I can at my high school to read this.

Quinones does an amazing job of clearly explaining a vast amount of research, of pulling all of the information together in a hugely accessible manner. Quinones has reinforced my already-existing tendency to question everything - which under some circumstances can be quite annoying, but in this instance is well justified. From a worldwide organization to the smallest home towns, Quinones pieced together the story of an epidemic.

Quinones addresses the metamorphosis of communities, societies, people, families, borders, industries, professions, and policies all under the influence of opioids. The author smoothly discusses the human effects as well as the business prowess associated with OxyContin and heroin. The confluence of events that created the perfect storm of addiction and death is astonishing, and Quinones provided a way for everyone to understand how it happened... and unfortunately is still happening.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as an independent read or as a curriculum connection in a psychology, sociology, economics, marketing, biology, or health class.

Urban/Street Literature Anxiety

I am a second-year public high school librarian in a suburban district serving a high population of kids who are "street savvy," listen to rap/hip hop, and express themselves using profanities as they cruise the hallways.  The descriptor is important because I need feedback regarding the place - if there is one - urban/street literature has in a public high school.

I picked up a title one student went on and on about and started getting itchy on page six and had a full-blown anxiety attack by page nine!   The story, at least the few pages I read, had lots of frank talk about sex and an abundance of profanity.  As one librarian noted, "...urban fiction focuses on the struggles of mostly young black men and women whose lives have been touched by crime and violence..."  I can see the book being checked out a lot because it offers what many students would see as their reality.  I have purchased the Port City High" and "Bluford" series that I would call Urban Lit Lite.

Censorship is a big deal for me.  Censorship might not be as big a deal to some parents or the Administration!  Do any of you offer titles from this list at your urban public high school?  Goodreads Hottest Urban Fiction  If so, what is your experience with it/them?

A Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord

A Handful of StarsA Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a wonderful book!!! I loved everything and everyone in this book, especially Lucky! Cynthia Lord's characters, setting, and oh those blueberries make for such a great read. Lily and her blind dog, Lucky live in Maine and meet Salma, a migrant worker. Salma becomes a very special friend to Lily and helps her as she tries new things. I loved growing close to Lily, Lucky, and her family and her intense wish to help Lucky regain his sight. I also enjoyed learning about the hardship of being a migrant worker, but Salma's love of art, family, and wishing for a better life were just a few things I wanted for Salma. I highly recommend this book to dog lovers, too; it will be a great read aloud to a class and also a great book to curl up with too!

Slowing Down & Savoring the Season

It may seem rather counter-intuitive to propose that we all make an effort to slow down this month because, of course, it is December.

Assuming you’re reading this the first week or so of the month, take a moment to think about all the events you’re scheduled to attend, the holiday preparations you need to make, and the extra errands you’ll need to run.

Add to that the unique challenges we as teachers face at this time of year:  preparing end of semester assessments, grading cumulative projects, having one more administrative observation squeezed in, and the last-minute calls of parents hoping their child can submit makeup work.

Maybe you’re feeling like you’ve got a handle on all of it, which is fantastic.  If you’re like me though, thinking about this makes me feel a bit anxious and overwhelmed before even getting started.  Truth be told, I know we’ll all get through the run-up to the holidays just fine.

But here’s the thing – I’d rather not just “get through” the weeks leading up to holiday break.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Little Mercies was an amazing audiobbok; narrated by: Kate Ruddand Tanya Eby! I read Gudenkauf's thriller, The Weight of Silence and could not put it down! The same was true with this thriller that combined a committed but harried social worker, Ellen with a parallel plot of a 10 year old child, Jenny. I could not stop listening as Ellen and Jenny's lives converge and both are being torn apart by life, family, and the system. The ripped from the headlines topics of foster care, abusive parents, death of a child are chilling, demanding empathy from the reader and society. I especially loved the author's interview following the audiobook which asks us to acknowledge and value the little mercies in life. A taut, emotional, worthwhile read.

Trollhunters by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus
Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Book Group and Disney-Hyperion for the ARC, Trollhunters by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus. What a spellbinding read! Daniel Kraus has done it again, crafting a horror story where the evil doers are so disgusting, you root for Jim Sturges and his best friend, Tubby, to triumph. Jim is a very normal teen with an overprotective dad, who suffered the loss of his brother 45 years ago as they rode bikes under a bridge. When 190 children went missing along with his brother, Jack; Jim’s dad changed. He outfitted their house with special locks and shutters and has had many hard and fast rules pertaining to safety for as long as Jim can remember. As Jim and Tub suffer bullying daily at school, other kids are starting to disappear again. Only now is Jim beginning to believe there really are monsters under his bed and under bridges. When Jim is called upon to save the missing kids, his lady love and his town; will he be able to muster the courage to be a trollhunter by night? The Five Stages of Andrew BrawleyThe Five Stages of Andrew Brawley by Shaun David Hutchinson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book took me on many highs (his relationship with Rusty) and many lows (hiding in a hospital because he blames himself for his parents deaths). Andrew is a teen who is concealing so many things from everyone, including himself. He is gifted with pen and writes/illustrates a story about Patient F (who is really him). He has made many friends in the hospital, both staff and patients and it is his interactions with all of these people, especially Father Mike, Lexi, and Trevor that resonated most deeply with me. As he runs from himself, he learns so many things from everyone he meets in the hospital, and we are left to wonder, will Drew ever leave the hospital and what will he find in the real world?

Define "Normal" by Julie Ann Peters

DefineDefine "Normal" by Julie Anne Peters
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I listened to this amazing audiobook from the Hub Challenge and LOVED it. Both girls are fantastic protagonists, although the story is told solely from Antonia's point of view; she is peer counseling Jazz Luther who is the total opposite of Antonia. As I listened to this compelling audiobook I realized why I love Julie Ann Peters books- she gets teens. This book is no different- both Jazz and Antonia have "stuff" going on and teens will love reading or listening to this book; can seeming "opposites" get along, trust each other, and become friends? Highly recommended!

Book Review: Plague Land by Alex Scarrow

Plague Land by Alex Scarrow

Read through NetGalley

publishing date December 1, 2017

No spoilers in this review...

Getting this review in under the wire! But.... Plague Land is GREAT! To be honest, I wasn't getting into it at first, but I soon couldn't put it down! And for those of you who don't like cliffhangers, this isn't one; though, it does leave itself open for a sequel!

Just enough science to make it scifi instead of fantasy, it is a story with a wide appeal. While the tension isn't too aggressive to scare off casual readers, avid fans of runaway virus stories won't be disappointed, either. The characters have depth - as far as the typical YA novel where the child is smarter than the parent goes. There is even international appeal as the virus goes, um, viral.

What's really appealing is the great descriptions of the evolving virus. Scarrow's adept as creating vivid images without details that drag down the storytelling.

I will definitely be getting this for my high school library!

The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved listening to this amazing audiobook! Mare Barrow is a Red who lives in a crushing world of poverty serving the ruling class known as the Silvers. When she makes a mistake as a thief, she is catapulted into the world of the Silvers and "imprisoned" as the Silver Princess hiding her red blood lineage (she is jeeringly called The Little Lightning Girl because she can create fire and electricity within her body and hands). I loved the romance, the worlds, the plot, and the truly evil characters Aveyard weaves into this drop dead action novel complete with magical powers, rebellion, and surprising duplicity. I am rooting for Mare in the sequel and I have to admit it is driving me nuts waiting. Come join in the twitter chat with #2jennsbookclub on 11/12 at 8pm EST!

This sequel was just as good as Han's first book, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, but even more probing of teens, romantic entanglements, and being true to ones' self.  Lara Jean is really dating Peter, the guy she fell for back in 7th grade; but with his ex constantly part of their dating, can Lara Jean be sure enough of herself and Peter's feeling for her to rise above Genevieve's evil machinations?  I did not want to put this book down; Lara Jean struggles like any teens, making good and bad choices, what will she do if some other guy from her past letter surfaces; enjoyable reading, one of my favorites! Make it one of yours!

George by Alex Gino

GeorgeGeorge by Alex Gino
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I saw author, Alex Gino, speak at a diversity conference in Philadelphia on 11/15 at Friends Central School and immediately purchased the book! George is a boy who knows he is really a girl. With a very supportive best friend, Kelly, George struggles with how to get the part of Charlotte, the spider, in the school play. George confides in her mom and brother about being different and as a strong main character I was enlightened and rooted for George. Readers will enjoy the way this story unfolds, the family and friendships portrayed, and how "different" is good! With a new voice in diversity, Alex Gino has written a book All should read.
